Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) is an advanced trenchless technology used in underground construction to install pipes, conduits, and cables without extensive excavation. This method is highly efficient for crossing obstacles like roads, rivers, and sensitive areas.HDD employs specialised drilling equipment to create a horizontal bore path beneath the surface, minimising environmental disruption and reducing project costs.
Involves drilling a small-diameter pilot hole along the desired bore path using a directional drilling rig equipped with a drill bit.
Enlarges the pilot hole diameter using progressively larger reaming tools, creating a larger void for the installation of the desired pipe or conduit.
After the pilot hole and remaining stages, the pipe or conduit is attached to a pulling cable and pulled back through the enlarged hole to its intended location.
Involves the use of drilling fluids (mud or bentonite slurry) to lubricate the drill string, stabilise the borehole, and carry excavated material back to the surface.
Utilises advanced technology such as gyroscopic tools, magnetic guidance systems, and electromagnetic locators to accurately control the direction and depth of the bore path during drilling operations.
Once the pilot hole is enlarged to the desired size, Back-Reaming tools are used to remove remaining debris and smooth the bore path before the pipe or conduit is installed and connected.
